I said I wasn't going to...

but when the Chook turned 6 she wanted a party.
Because she's in kindergarten and it's an important time for forming friendships,
I said yes.

So she got busy drawing up some invitations.
And I got busy sewing...
More celebratory bunting
And hankies.
Lot's of children's hankies.
Out of reclaimed sheets.

I cursed myself...
But it had to be fairly green.
So much better than balloons.
Triangle bunting.
Cubby house bunting.
Birthday bunting.
And the bright flags from Aunty Neehee's wedding.
The shed was cleaned.
The lawn was mowed.
The backyard looked a dream!

The kids had some work to do.
They had to earn their party favours.
First task was to decorate their party bags.

They had to listen carefully.
Then dance.
And sing.
And limbo.

And conga.
And dance some more.

And after each activity...
In a nice long line,
One at a time,
they collected favours for their party bags.

Marigolds they potted into little cardboard pots.
Handmade Soy wax candles.
A package of healthy yet tasty biscuits.
Hair ribbons in school uniform colours.
Some home crafted chocolates.
And a pack of Eco Hankies.

Then it was time for the cake.
Wholemeal and home made.
With a recycled doll.

But the icing
and marshmallows
and candles...
Maybe not so green.

Yet overall, the 5 and 6 year olds declared the birthday party a success.
And hopefully they'll use the hankies.
And plant their plants.
And their parents will buy more of the toothbrushes.
And hopefully for their next birthday parties they'll be inspired to be
Less plastic fantastic
More keen to be green!
